Ottawa says funding set aside for the Greener Homes Grant has dried up, forcing them to end the program in less than two weeks.
The program, which provided rebates for the installation of heat pumps, was first launched in 2021 and was supposed to run for seven years. With over 165,000 grants issued to date, funding has dwindled—meaning government will not be accepting new applications after February 19.
Charlene Dunn, owner of AmeriSpec in St. John’s, says the need for evaluations has had their business booming since the program was launched.
“It’s going to be detrimental to a lot of folks in our industry,” Dunn says. “We had a massive hiring in our business itself, just because they had such a push on needing energy advisors. We’ve got about 21 people now on staff.”
While they’re unsure what the future holds, Dunn remains hopeful another federal program is on the horizon.
She says they’re all speculating that there has to be something else coming down by Ottawa given the amount of infrastructure that was put in place in recent years.
