Showering that special someone with gifts is a common sign of affection on Valentine’s Day, but some flowers and chocolates could be harmful to pets.
Local veterinarian Dr. Maggie Brown-Bury says lilies in particular are highly toxic to cats.
She says true lilies and day lilies in particular are poisonous to cats. Even ingesting pollen or drinking water from the vase can make felines sick and can lead to kidney failure—which can be fatal.
She says other flowers can also cause cats to feel sick to their stomach. The vet recommends purchasing non-toxic plants like roses.
When it comes to canines, Brown-Bury says they tend to see an increase in illness linked to chocolate around holidays. She says the severity of illness depends on various factors like the size of the dog.
She says a large dog eating a small amount of chocolate might lead to an upset stomach and nothing more. However, a smaller dog eating a sizable amount of dark chocolate might require owners to induce vomiting or prompt a trip to the vet.
Brown-Bury says a pet poison control helpline is also available for advice at 1-855-764-7661.
