A fishing trawler has run aground on the south coast. The incident happened a couple of hours before daybreak. The vessel, named the Cape Cordell, is listing as it sits in the waters off Fortune about 100-feet from shore.
Fortune Mayor Deanne Hickman, who is not currently in the town, tells VOCM News that the trawler is believed to have about four crew on board.
She says it was on its way to the local fish plant when it ran aground.
Hickman says an attempt was made to free the vessel, but was unsuccessful.
The weather is stormy in the area with snow reducing visibility and northerly winds gusting to 50 km/h.
In a statement, Ocean Choice International says they were notified of the incident just after 5:30 a.m. this morning.
They say the safety of the ship’s crew is their priority, and they remain in close contact with the captain.
The vessel is not owned by OCI, but it was en route to the OCI-owned plant in Fortune.
The Canadian Coast Guard is now on scene assisting with the situation.
