Three crewmembers of a fishing vessel that ran aground on the south coast this week are safely back on dry land.
The Cape Cordell, carrying a load of redfish, became grounded near Fortune during the height of this week’s storm.
The crew had planned to stick it out until the vessel could be freed.
But those efforts proved fruitless, leading to Wednesday night’s rescue operation.
The crew, clad in immersions suits, battled wind and waves and waded to shore using a roped ladder and assistance from members of the Coast Guard ship Barrington Bay, local firefighters and ambulance services.
Coast Guard officials remain on the scene and in command of the situation, which is now focused on minimizing the risk to the marine environment.
‘The Cape Cordell’s home port is listed as Sydney, N.S.
