The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor has thrown its support behind a group of internal medicine specialists based in central Newfoundland who say they will withdraw their services unless “specific and critical requests” they’ve made to government are addressed.
The doctors are calling for the recruitment of additional staff, including clerical workers, a full-time nurse, personal care attendant and a nurse practitioner to help care for patients.
The town says those staff, which are found in other cancer care clinics in the province, are “fundamental” to making sure that patients in central Newfoundland have a “fighting chance” against cancer.
The town calls it disheartening to know that the cancer care clinic in Grand Falls-Windsor does not have access to the same level of resources as other clinics in the province.
Mayor Barry Manuel is asking Premier Andrew Furey and Health Minister Tom Osborne to reach out to the doctors involved and find a resolution.
