The Department of Education says educational psychologists and counsellors continue to be available at schools for those who are troubled or affected by a raft of charges that have been laid against a teacher and coach.
Earlier this week it was revealed that the number of charges against Markus Hicks has surpassed 150, with a total of 24 complainants now having come forward.
It’s alleged that Hicks used fictitious identities and social media accounts across various platforms to lure people, including minors, to his Paradise home for sexual encounters.
Government says the situation is being taken “very seriously” and the safety of students is “the most important component of the education system.”
The say the situation is being monitored and more supports will be made available for students and staff as needed.
The Department states that teachers and staff work every day to make schools safe for students, citing the body safety program as an example.
As the matter is before the courts, the Department says they cannot comment further.
