Getting the appropriate ice time to practice at the local curling club has been tough, even for six-time Brier champions Team Gushue.
The Bally Haly Curling Club closed its doors last year after it was part of a land swap with Clovelly. That leaves one club in the metro region—the RE/MAX Centre in centre city St. John’s.
Add that to the fact that curling is a growing sport, skip Brad Gushue says it’s been difficult to get ice time.
“We’ve kind of struggled this year in getting access to ice time,” Gushue tells VOCM News. “We’ve gotten it, but we’ve had to do it at some strange hours in the day because right now our curling club is busting at the seams.”
Gushue says additional curling sheets or even another club would not go astray in the region. The only problem with that, he says, is that it takes time to expand, and those additional resources are needed now.
He says it’s disappointing that there’s a struggle to get the ice time they need to practice, but he hopes talks of building a new curling club or expanding the current one will pick up steam in the near future.
