Dozens of fishery workers from all over the province converged on Confederation Building trying to convince government to lift restrictions on fish sales.
Disputes over prices paid to harvesters have plagued the crab fishery for the past several years, resulting in a tie-up of the boats last year.
Crab boat owner John Efford says it makes no sense to have a law that prevents them from selling to outside buyers once the fish is landed in this province. They can sell their catch to outside buyers if they proceed directly from sea to another province, but that’s an expensive venture because of the distance.
He wants government to allow outside buyers into this province, and is calling on government to give a permit to anyone who wishes to process fish.
