A man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his estranged spouse had his case called again this afternoon in provincial court.
It marked the third time Ibrahim Al Ahmad’s name has been called since the shocking events of one week ago. Yet he has yet to utter a word due to injuries he sustained himself last week.
Police were called to the area of Liam Drive in Outer Cove around 10 in the morning last Tuesday.
There they found the body of a woman in an abandoned home, with the chief medical examiner quickly deeming it to be a homicide.
Two days later Al Ahmad was arrested and charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder, which suggests he planned it all.
Court documents also show a previous history of threats and assaults against his ex-wife and their children.
The 36-year-old accused remains in custody in hospital, where he continues to recover from what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds.
As a result, all three court appearances to date have been by phone from his hospital room, with an officer by his side.
A legal aid lawyer did meet with Al Ahmad this morning, with the court giving him two weeks to apply for counsel, and decide how we wants to proceed.
An Arabic translator has also been present for each hearing to ensure Al Ahmad, who is from Syria, understands everything that’s being said.
He will remain in custody at least until his next court date on March 27.
