Former premier Danny Williams says the Brad Gushue curling rink’s achievements are worthy of recognition with a permanent monument.
And he’s planning to make that happen in his massive Galway development on the outskirts of St. John’s.
Williams says he has already commissioned local sculptor Morgan MacDonald to come up with a design that embodies the team’s accomplishments from Olympic gold in 2006 to its six Brier titles.

Williams says it won’t necessarily be a sculpture, adding it will “have some figures in it, with a very modernistic look that will be quite eye-capturing.”
Williams has approached the city with the idea, but isn’t looking for public funds.
He’s hoping the finished product can be erected in a highly visible location, such as one of the roundabouts in Galway, keeping in mind a past dustup over placement of a Christmas tree.
The city famously ordered its removal from a roundabout over safety concerns with visibility for drivers.
A member of the public later replaced it with a smaller tree cutout.
The monument would not be far from Brad Gushue’s home in nearby Southlands, which already includes several streets named after team members.
