The largest wooden church in this province is one of 12 finalists for the National Trust’s The Next Great Save competition.
The winner will receive $50,000 toward the protection and renewal of an historic property or building.
Our Lady of Mercy in Aguathuna was built through volunteer efforts over a 14-year period from 1911 to 1925.
The church was built in anticipation of a local population boom amid the opening of a nearby limestone quarry, but the surge never happened.
It was recognized as a Registered Heritage Structure in 1997, later deconsecrated, and is now run by a local community group.
Public voting takes place between April 18th and May 6th on the National Trust’s competition website.
The winner will be announced on May 7th.
