Weekend meetings between the FFAW and ASP resulted in a Sunday evening agreement reached between the parties to begin the 2024 crab fishery.
Union President Greg Pretty calls it an “historic pricing agreement…restoring fairness in the crab fishery and giving harvesters a sharing arrangement they have not seen in a long time.”
Pretty is pleased with the progress made and he offered his thanks to Premier Andrew Furey for “ensuring the fishery gets off the ground as quickly as possible for the benefit of all those involved.”
The union had organized a huge rally for Confederation Building starting Monday morning as the sitting of the House of Assembly was set to resume—amid continued concerns about an inability to reach what they considered to be a fair deal.
The deal includes a minimum price of $3.00 a pound. The settlement price will be 38.5 per cent of actual FOB Boston sales of 5 to 8 ounce sections from the start of the fishery through three weeks after the fishery ends.
Both sides will also be allowed to a reconsideration after the market reaches $6.50 US.
