The water is back but the work continues in Conception Bay South with cleanup following breaks in the main water line on Anchorage Road this week which left some people without water for 28 hours.
The system was fully restored by about 7:00 last night, allowing recreation facilities to reopen last night and schools to reopen today.
CBS Mayor Darrin Bent said on Your VOCM Mornings this morning that because of the amount of pressure, water went everywhere including on private property so the town will be responsible for cleaning up.
Neighbouring municipalities pitched in to help rescue a major hockey tournament in Kelligrews which had to do some shuffling after the closure of the two arenas in the town. Bent says everything is back on full tilt today.
$2.5 million in funding has been secured and tenders have been issued for replacement of 800 metres of the 30-year-old water line that has been causing all the problems.
“When you get older and compromised piping in the spring of the year with the freeze/thaw and the high water table; that’s why we’re seeing that now,” says Bent. “We’re going to have that piping replaced later this year for residents.”
