The woman in charge of the review of salaries for MHAs says high pay raises across the country led to a decision to recommend a salary increase for politicians.
The Members’ Compensation Review Committee recommended that the base salary for MHAs be set at $117,000 – a nearly $22,000 increase.
Heather Jacobs says in some cases, legislatures increased their provincial salaries by almost $50-thousand – and Newfoundland and Labrador continues to lag behind other jurisdictions.
“All Canadian jurisdictions have increased the salaries of their legislatures since 2024. In particular, Nova Scotia and Ontario, both of whom had frozen the salaries of their legislatures. In 2025, Nova Scotia increased the salary from $89,235 to $115,000 and Ontario increased its from $116,550 to $160,000.”
She says some positions in this province are amongst the lowest paid in the country.
