A who’s-who of the hockey world is expected to pay their respects today to one of the greatest play-by-play announcers in the sports history.
The funeral for Bob Cole, who passed away last week at the age of 90, takes place this afternoon at 2:00 from St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in St. John’s.
He is widely ranked, along with Foster Hewitt and Danny Gallivan, among the very best ever to call a game.

Cole’s talent and legacy has been celebrated across the country with tributes on television and radio and from politicians of all stripes in the House of Assembly.
The St. John’s native was also a skilled athlete, excelling in several high school sports and later being inducted into the St. John’s Baseball Hall of Fame. Beyond sports, Cole contributed to his community by hosting charity events that drew in NHL stars to raise money for local causes.
