Three more historic properties in the province have been added to Heritage NL’s list of Registered Heritage Structures.
The Terra Nova Sulphite Company Pulp Mill is a large concrete structure on Angle Brook in Alexander Bay in Glovertown. The building was constructed in 1920 by the Norwegian company Terra Nova Sulphite Company Limited.
It was supposed to open in the fall of 1921 but with the falling value of the Norwegian Kroner, and hesitant investors, the mill never came into operation. Built from reinforced concrete, the mill became a landmark in Glovertown.
The Surgeon Cove Head Light Station on Exploits Island was built in 1911, and in 1920 a hoisting engine was installed to allow material to be lifted up the cliff side from boats below. The station was staffed until 2002 and is now owned by Adventures Newfoundland.
Meanwhile, the Holloway Property in Lethbridge, Bonavista Bay was bult in 1915 and includes a two and a half storey Victorian gothic-style house and two outbuildings—a workshop and a barn. The property remained in the Holloway family until 1975.
