WestJet has reached a deal with its mechanics to end a strike that had disrupted the travel plans of tens of thousands of travellers over the Canada Day long weekend.
It will be a rough week as the airline works to get back on track following the strike. Most WestJet flights scheduled for in and out of St. John’s today remain cancelled but travellers should check with the carrier on the status of their flight.
The union, the Airplane Mechanics Fraternal Association, is urging its members to return to work immediately pending a vote on the temporary agreement.
Some 680 workers, whose daily inspections and repairs are essential to airline operations, had walked off the job on Friday evening.
Since Thursday, WestJet has cancelled 829 flights scheduled between then and Monday in the busiest travel weekend of the season.
