The first races of the 206th running of the Confederation 75 Royal St. John’s Regatta are in the books.
The Rogers Senior Women’s was a close one with Volkswagon St. John’s crossing the line in 5:10.49, just in front of Hyflodraulic’s 5:12.90. Smith Stockley (5:26), Dawe & Burke (5:32) and Momentum Health (5:38) rounded out the top five.
While the five teams in the first women’s race usually advance to the championship in the evening, O’Neill Nissan, rowing in the second race of the day, won it in a time of 5:37.44 to nudge out Momentum Health.
In the men’s category, Capital Home Hardware, the favourite, rowed 9:48 to claim first place with East Coast Kia well back at 10:15.06. Torbay was third (10:34.24) with EMCO/HVAC fourth (10:45.01) and Smith Stockley fifth (10:54.86.)
The winner of the second men’s race, CAF #1, so far sneaks into the championship race with their time of 10:44.44 to squeeze out Smith Stockley.
The championship races go at 6:30 for the women and 7 p.m. for the men.
The weather is co-operating, although people pondside say the winds have been picking up throughout the day.
Race results are available through the Royal St. John’s Regatta Website.
