Remembrance Day is a shops closing day in Newfoundland and Labrador, which means that most businesses and provincial and municipal government offices are closed.
There will be no garbage collection in most municipalities and in St. John’s paid parking will not be enforced.
There will be a number of road closures in the downtown leading up to this morning’s Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial.
The Remembrance Day parade will begin at the Sergeant’s Memorial on Queen’s Road at 10:10 and is scheduled to arrive at the National War Memorial at approximately 10:45. The ceremony will begin at 10:55 with a moment of silence at 11:00.
Today’s ceremony will include a gun salute from the Signal Hill Battery at 11:00.
Members of local reserve unit the 37 Combat Engineer Regiment will fire blank ammunition.
The gun will fire 23 times and civilians will not be allowed close enough to risk damage to their hearing.
The 37 Combat Engineer Regiment is the same one that fired the gun salute at the interment of the Unknown Soldier.
Wreath-laying ceremonies are taking place at war memorials and cenotaphs throughout the province.
In Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a flypast by the Royal Canadian Air Force will take place to mark Remembrance Day.
Aircraft will fly over Remembrance Day events at an altitude no lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle on their routes.
