Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has shuffled his cabinet in the wake of Chrystia Freeland’s bombshell resignation this week.
Freeland’s departure follows a number of other cabinet ministers who have either stepped down or signaled their intention not to run again.
A number of backbenchers are being promoted.
St. John’s East MP Joanne Thompson, whose riding is expected to be a real battleground come the next election, was sworn-in at Rideau Hall over the lunch hour, taking over the Seniors portfolio vacated by Seamus O’Regan.
Nathaniel Erskine-Smith is the next housing minister, and David McGuinty is taking over public safety. Ginette Petitpas-Taylor is the President of Treasury Board, Anita Anand is the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, while Steve MacKinnon is the new minister of Employment.
