A new study by Mass General Brigham has found that diets high in processed meats, including bacon, hot dogs and sausage were associated with a 13 per cent higher risk of dementia.
The findings were drawn from a group of participants who had been followed for up to 43 years.
Researcher Dr. Daniel Wang says the consumption of red meat, and processed meat in particular, was associated with higher levels of cognitive decline.
They also found that if processed red meat is replaced by healthier choices, the risk goes down. “Such as chicken, and fish, low-fat dairy and especially nuts and legumes, in your daily diet you have additional cognitive health benefits,” he said.
