A man who was inducted into the Sport NL Hall of Fame and who was a celebrated softball and senior hockey player has passed away.
Ward Gosse began playing minor softball in his hometown of Bay Roberts.
He played on the Bay Roberts team that claimed the Provincial Midget Championship in 1986 when the team went on to represent the province at the Midget Boys’ National Championships.
He competed nationally as a member of 15 provincial teams, bringing home gold in 2012, silver in 1995, 2005 and 2007, and bronze in 2001 and 2010.
He was named all-star pitcher three times, and was also inducted into the NL Softball Hall of Fame.
He also made a mark in hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador, having played for 17 years in the Senior A St. John’s Hockey League, and being on five Herder championship teams in the 1990s and early 2000s.
He was named top defenseman in the West Coast Hockey League for the 2002-2003 season.
