A local dance company says there is a real shortage of spaces in St. John’s in which to host dance groups, and they’re turning to the public to gauge interest in a purpose-built space for dancers.
Julia Carr of Neighborhood Dance Works says they are hoping to build a new facility to host many types of dance.
In December, participants of the city’s hugely popular line dancing classes were told that they won’t be able to wear their cowboy boots on the floors in the new Mews Centre.
She says they’re hoping to build a facility to host all types of dance, with different types of floors.
“It’s kind of a special thing that I think a lot of people don’t realize about dance, concrete isn’t great for our joints. We like a sprung floor. We like a surface that’s slippery, but not too slippery. You don’t want it to be a cold floor.”
“My vision is to have at least three studios….three is a number that I feel like could be filled.”
She’s hosting a public consultation tomorrow night at 6:30 at the Foran/Green Room at St. John’s city hall.
