Premier Andrew Furey says he won’t ruling anything out, but a run at the federal Liberal leadership is not something he intends to pursue at this time.
Furey’s name has been part of the conversation among those speculating about who might still throw their hat in the ring.
Furey says he’s not fully ideologically aligned with the federal Liberal agenda.
He says his political approach is centrist in nature.
“I believe in resource development, I don’t believe in the carbon scheme, I do believe we have to be responsible with climate, but I do believe we have an incredible oil and gas product here in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
He says some federal regulations have inhibited extraction and development, and “that’s caused great friction with myself and some of the current federal policies, like the emissions cap,” which Furey says “doesn’t make any sense for Newfoundland and Labrador.”
“It certainly doesn’t make any sense in the current geo-political context, and hopefully they come to their senses and re-evaluate that particular policy.”
