The Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance for the Control of Tobacco says there is a “vaping crisis” among young people in the province, and they have developed some resources to help deal with it.
The organization says the province has the highest youth vaping rates in the country, with 40 per cent of students in grades seven to 12 having tried e-cigarettes.
To combat this, ACT has developed Nicotine Expose Kits as an educational resource targeted at that age group.
Program and Education Coordinator Melissa Moore says the kits are filling a gap, noting that the education curriculum in public school’s is lagging behind.
She says the health curriculum currently used in grades four to 10 pre-dates the “vaping phenomenon” so children are learning about smoking and addiction, but not vaping.
