Harbour Grace RCMP had to deploy the spike belt on Friday to halt a vehicle that repeatedly evaded police attempts to have it pull over.
Police spotted a Transit van in Carbonear around 10:00 Friday morning that was believed to be the same vehicle that had sped away from police earlier in the week.
When officers tried to pull the van over on High Road South in Carbonear, the driver hit the gas, speeding away in a dangerous manner.
Police decided to call off the pursuit in the interest of public safety.
The van was later found on Cathedral Street in Harbour Grace, where, once again, officers attempted to pull it over but were unsuccessful. It was later found on Barrack’s Road in Bay Roberts, and then on the Main Road in Shearstown.
RCMP deployed the spike belt on Picketts Road in Shearstown, finally bringing the vehicle to a halt. The driver, 38-year-old Shawn Clarke, was arrested without further incident.
He’s now facing multiple counts of flight from police, dangerous driving and failing to comply with a probation order.
He’s scheduled to return to court at a later date.
