Don’t be surprised if you see some vividly-coloured caribou over the next couple of months.
Wildlife officials are conducting a caribou survey on the western portion of the island – west of the Bay d’Espoir Highway and south of the Trans Canada.
The survey area includes the Gaff Topsails, Grey River, Buchans Pot Hill and La Poile caribou herds, as well as the Hodges Hills and Blo-Me-Down herds in central and in the Stephenville area.
Some caribou will be marked with vivid orange or blue paint as part of the population survey.
The paint does not harm the animals, and will come off when they shed their winter coats.
