Exporters in Newfoundland and Labrador are switching gear and finding markets other than the United States as a result of the trade war.
Robin Philpott of the NL Lumber Producers Association says mills are now eyeing European markets, but the transition won’t be an easy one due to different standards.
He says more government support is needed to make it work.
“On the studwood side of things, that risk level is much higher because they make a little bit more D grade and they rely more on the domestic market for the sale of those products. So for them, retooling to metric to go to the European Union, there’s a significant risk there of what do I do with these, over what we’ll call below UK grade materials, but would have been on grade within Canada for certain smaller markets.”
