Trans Rights Advocate and abuse survivor Gemma Hickey is claiming a small victory after managing to get in and out of the U.S. in recent days.
That’s despite an executive order by President Donald Trump that recognizes only two genders, male and female, while rolling back diversity programs.
Since 2019, Canadians who do not identify as female or male can list their gender as “X” on their passports.
Hickey was trying to travel to Seattle for an event, but was denied boarding in Toronto, causing an overnight stay there.
Undeterred, they requested booking through Vancouver instead, where Hickey encountered resistance at Customs.
An agent questioned Hickey’s name and identity, and at one point their passport would not scan. Eventually, the agent allowed entry, calling them “sir, or whatever.”
Hickey is advising others to have a safety or backup plan in place should things go south, so to speak, at the U.S. border.
“The Trump administration had said they’re not going to do anything about identity documents that have X on them now, but when they’re up for renewal, they are going to go back to their ‘God-given sex’,” said Hickey.
“But we’re hearing documents are being confiscated, people are being put on master lists. Basically it amounts to red-tagging, and that’s a move right out of the Nazi playbook.”
