The NDP is urging the provincial government to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic, and take what they call meaningful action to address the issue.
February is Violence Prevention Month.
NDP Leader Jim DInn says Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the highest rates of intimate partner violence in the country, closing in on “crisis” levels.
He says non-profits focused on women’s rights, and justice for survivors, are underfunded and he wants to see more funding for solutions that survivors and advocates have been demanding for years.
To date, Nova Scotia is the only province in Canada to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic.
