Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the entire island heading into the Valentine’s weekend with high winds and snow in the forecast this Friday.
Areas like western Newfoundland could see 10 to 25 cm through Friday, coupled with winds gusting to 70 to 110 km/h, with 130 to 150 km/h in the Wreckhouse area.
Across Eastern Newfoundland, southeasterly gusts could reach 70 to 80 or higher, with 10-15 cm of snow possible.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says stormy conditions could linger into the weekend on the west coast.
“Later Friday into Friday night, we are expecting some pretty strong west and northwest winds to pick up. We will see some areas that will see some off and on flurries or some more snow that will move in and will be very sporadic off and on throughout. ”
“But anytime there is going to be snow, those winds are going to be quite strong again. So you’re still going to see some periodic blustery conditions,” says Neil.
