Efforts are now underway to create what’s believed to be the first women’s fishing co-op in the province.
Co-founder Kimberly Orren of Fishing for Success in Petty Harbour says many women are left out of key parts of the fishery, a situation she says goes back generations
She’s hoping to bring more women and diverse voices into the fishery through her cooperative.
“But we really need to move women into the boat and into commercial leadership areas and so this is where we’re hoping to do that. Right now the government of Canada is really promoting this blue economy. What does this space look like on the ocean for commercial work? So we want to provide people with a way to dabble in it, and so the way to do that I think is through a cooperative model,” she told Tim Powers.
Orren is inviting people of all ages to become involved, and each out to become a member of their board, or volunteer.
