The town of Trepassey’s pleas for a new breakwater ended up on the floor of the legislature yesterday.
The town’s original breakwater was damaged by successive hurricanes a few years ago. They secured a new one, but that was knocked down during a storm in February 2024.
As they wait for a new solution, the town says it is costing them a “fortune” to bring in heavy equipment every time waves throw rocks and debris across the road.
PC MHA Loyola O’Driscoll raised the issue during Question Period, and Minister Steve Crocker, acting in place of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Fred Hutton, responded, saying that the department is working with the town on the assessment and engineering of a new breakwater.
O’Driscoll says the situation is “not acceptable” and wants to know when the project will be tendered. Crocker’s retort is that they “can’t go to Wal-Mart and buy a breakwater,” and it must be properly engineered and done right – which the department is working on.
