A political scientist at Dalhousie University says no matter who wins the provincial Liberal leadership race, they have to be ready to join the fight against the Trump administration.
Premier Andrew Furey shocked the province last month after announcing his intention to step down once a new leader is chosen in early May.
While it wasn’t the reason for his resignation, Furey admits that dealing with Trump’s tariffs and threats to Canadian sovereignty did impact the timing of his decision.

So far, John Abbott and John Hogan are the only two candidates to throw their hat in the ring to succeed Furey.
Lori Turnbull says whoever the successful candidate ends up being, they’ll have to hit the ground running in joining fellow premiers in the so-called Team Canada approach.
She says it will be important for the new leader to communicate with residents about the impacts of Trump’s plans on the province and to be able to come up with a plan to fight back as a province.
