An ad hoc committee formed to consider the decision to remove the Ode to Newfoundland from convocation ceremonies at Memorial University, is recommending that the Ode be reinstated.
Memorial University’s decision raised the ire of many in the province given that the university was founded in memory of the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who paid the ultimate sacrifice in WWI.
The debate even prompted MHAs to rise in the Legislature to sing odes to both Newfoundland and Labrador
The reason given for dropping the Ode at the time was because it was not considered to be inclusive.
The committee is recommending that the Ode be reinstated and that the university reissue an apology for the removal of the Ode and recommit to Truth and Reconciliation and support for the Strategic Framework for Indigenization.
The Senate will vote on a decision tomorrow.
