Premier Andrew Furey doesn’t believe the gains made by the federal Conservatives in Newfoundland and Labrador are an indication of waning support for the provincial Liberals.
The Conservatives picked up an extra seat in Long Range Mountains with Carol Anstey. Conservative Clifford Small keeps his seat in Ottawa after he was re-elected in Central Newfoundland.
Of the province’s seven seats, two are held by the Conservatives and the remaining five are occupied by the Liberals.
Furey says what happens on the federal level is not an indication for the support for the party in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I mean we’ve seen that there’s been the ability to distinguish between federal and provincial politics. I believe that the voters in Newfoundland and Labrador are sophisticated, educated, smart voters. They understand that while they may have had issues with former Prime Minister Trudeau for example, they didn’t particularly in every issue have an issue with me and we were able to win two by-elections as a result.”
