Organizers of this summer’s Canada Games yesterday celebrated 100 days from the start of competition in St. John’s.
And they did so in style, unveiling the medals and their uniquely-Newfoundland and Labrador design by Torbay artist Heather Coughlan.

They also made another appeal for volunteers, having eclipsed 4,000 but needing 1,000 more, and insisted everything—including the Aquarena—will be ready in time.
The co-chair of the Games host society, Karl Smith, says their design is symbolic of the work that’s going on behind the scenes.
“It’s really appropriate that the medals have an iceberg on them because the Games are going to be like that,” he said. “People will see the very tip and it’ll look like it’s going great and everything is fine, but we’re like ducks with our feet going crazy underwater. Five thousand volunteers are what we need to pull this off, Games-time volunteers; we have 4,000 now, so with 100 days out we need 10 volunteers a day. I don’t think that’ll be a challenge for us, we’ll get to 5,000.”
