Mark Hiscock’s Shanneyganock bandmates took to the stage at the East Coast Music Awards last night for an emotional tribute to the musician, who passed away earlier this week.
On the stage under a single spotlight an accordion lay silent in memory of Hiscock.
Members of Shanneyganock were joined on stage by legendary Newfoundland musician Bud Davidge for a rendition of the beloved song music and friends.
Hiscock lead the vocals for a cover of that track released years ago, on which Davidge—the original singer as part of the band Simani—was featured.
Shanneyganock co-founder Chris Andrews says they “couldn’t think of a better song to do,” noting that the original plan for the ECMA performance before Hiscock’s passing was for them to do a medley of Newfoundland hits.
Andrews says they didn’t feel right doing that, but “it certainly felt right singing music and Friends. He describes the performance as a “lovely” thing to do.
