A first minister in the Nunatsiavut Government is calling on the provincial government to implement a program similar to Quebec to address air transportation challenges in Labrador.
The provincial government announced a deal with PAL two weeks ago for a seasonal service route connecting St. John’s, Gander and Deer Lake.
Melva Williams says the concerns of Labrador residents are being “ignored,” especially for those living in isolated communities where “exorbitant” airfare costs make access to essential services “nearly impossible.”
Williams says Quebec has a Regional Air Access Program, which provides a 60 per cent subsidy on flights between Wabush and destinations in that province.
She wants to see something similar in this province.
Meanwhile, the PC MHA for Torngat Mountains brought the issue of air travel in Labrador to the floor of the House of Assembly on Monday.
Evans asks why Labrador was left out of the air travel loop. Premier John Hogan says it is an issue he heard while on the Liberal Leadership campaign trail, and it is something he will be reaching out to people in Labrador to have discussions in the coming days.
