The City of Mount Pearl has cut the ribbon to mark the installation of new artificial turf at the Middle Smallwood Soccer Field.
Originally installed in 2010, the previous covering reached the end of its lifespan. Mayor Dave Aker says the new turf is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to safe, accessible, and high-quality recreational infrastructure. The project cost $1.15-million, with the city contributing $300,000.
The Gushue Complex is a busy place with baseball and soccer fields. As well, that’s the site for the new community centre, which is about 60 per cent complete says the mayor.
He says having the new turf extends the season and allows players to avail of additional training time, especially in the shoulder months but also in the winter months during a winter when snow is scarce, such as the last one.
Lisa Inkpen, President of the Mount Pearl Soccer Association, says the field inspires growth, connection and pride.
