King Charles III read the Speech from the Throne from the Red Chamber this afternoon, opening parliament under a new government and Prime Minister.
Canada will join Europe’s defense plan for acquisitions of military equipment, potentially reducing our reliance on the United States.
The Sovereign, who is visiting Canada for the 20th time, noted in the speech that uncertain times also present the country with opportunity.
The federal government noted that spending has been increasing by 9 per cent per year, but Prime Minister Mark Carney promises to reduce that to less than 2 per cent.
He says the reduction in spending will not affect financial transfers to provinces. He also plans to erase the deficit in three years by putting a cap on the public service and improving productivity through the use of technology.
Government also pledges to be tough on crime by making it more difficult to get bail for crimes like car theft and home invasions.
