The South American nation of Guyana has come knocking, seeking out offshore exploration expertise as it attempts to develop a massive offshore oil find.
NSB-Omega, a technical consulting and staffing company, is among the companies recruiting workers with experience in offshore oil development.
Company spokesman Philip Harrington says the potential in Guyana is huge.
He calls Guyana “a frontier market” with resources “far and away from what we’ve found in offshore Newfoundland and Labrador in the past 30 years.” The country is underdeveloped, and it’s a “very exciting time for anyone involved.”
And Harrington says it’s only getting busier.
“They have ramped-up significantly. In the past five years alone, they’ve now outstripped production from Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore.”
Territorial dispute continues
However, the discovery of oil reserves off Guyana has deepened a territorial dispute between the country and neighbouring Venezuela, raising the stakes significantly. Guyana issued drilling licences in disputed waters in 2023.
The United States, the U.K. and Brazil all support Guyana’s position, with the U.S. recently condemning Venezuelan naval incursions into the region.
