The winners of this year’s traffic-calming sweepstakes have been announced by the City of St. John’s.
Speeding is a serious issue in many areas of the city, but there are only so many resources and speed bumps to go around.
This year’s lucky recipients include:
– Glenyere Street between Birchwynd Street and Virginia Road;
– Empire Avenue between Circular Road and Rennies Mill Road;
and
– Smithville Crescent between Strawberry Marsh Road and Long Pond Road.
The temporary speed bumps or cushions will be installed over the coming weeks and be taken up before winter sets in.
Area residents will then be surveyed, with 60 per cent approval needed to make the speed bumps permanent.
Councillor Tom Davis, speaking at yesterday’s committee of the whole meeting, gave a shout-out to city staff for their response.
“I just want to thank staff because these are two areas where there’s been a lot of public requests for us to do something,” he said. “This is very timely, and I’m looking forward to seeing those temporary speed bumps put in place.”
