The City of St. John’s has proclaimed this to be AccessAbility Week, as it’s also celebrated across the rest of the country.
It’s marked to acknowledge and help create awareness of the importance of accessible and inclusive programs, services and spaces in the community.
It also coincides with today’s Easter Seals Red Shirt Day of Action, with people encouraged to wear red to show their support.
And it comes at a time when disabilities, and the lack of a disabilities advocate, are top of mind.
Trisha Rose, the city’s accessibility and inclusion facilitator, briefly addressed council and the public prior to yesterday’s committee of the whole meeting.
“You may have noticed that City Hall has been lit red for the week to show the city’s support for accessibility and inclusion,” she said. “And with Easter Seals Red Shirt Day of Action, we encourage people to wear red today and show your support, create awareness and spark conversations that will help educate and teach others.”
