The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is raising questions about the amount of money being paid out to former MPs.
Federal Director Franco Terrazzano says former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will collect two pensions: one beginning at $141,000 a year, which kicks in when he turns 55, and another worth $73,000 a year that starts when Trudeau turns 67.
That amounts to an estimated $8.4 million paid out if Trudeau lives to 90, according to Terrazzano.
In addition, says Terrazzano, defeated and retiring MPs will collect a cumulative total of about $5 million in annual pension payments.
He told the Tim Powers Show on VOCM that pension reform is needed in the House of Commons.
“It’s not really reasonable to me that a Member of Parliament would only have to serve for six years and then essentially get a pension for life.” He believes the second pension for PMs should also be eliminated.
