The new health human resources report released by government last week falls short of a true understanding of the crisis facing the health care system according to the Registered Nurses Union.
President Yvette Coffey says the report appears to be based on numbers that date back to the 1990s.
She says suggestions that the situation is improving is based on data from 2022 and interpreted through assumptions from the 1990s.
She questions whether that truly reflects meaningful progress.
“So, we’re basing our staffing levels, and this report is basing staffing levels on the number of core staff from 30 years ago; not based on the acuity or the medical needs of the patients in the community and in the acute care and long-term care settings. So that’s where it falls short.”
