Exxon Mobil says Newfoundland and Labrador has a viable future for oil, but the company is still unsure how natural gas fits into the equation.
Government has plans to expand its natural gas footprint but so far, no company is interested in developing the resource.
A recent natural gas resource assessment determined potential for an estimated 9.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the province’s offshore .
Kerry Moreland says they’re looking at the report, but are stopping short of making any promises.
“Gas plays an important role for us in terms of providing energy to our facilities,” says Moreland.
“Gas is actually very important to providing us pressure support in certain places to allow us to recover additional resources to ultimately maximize the value of our assets. But, I would say it’s very early days with the report out. So we haven’t had a chance really to dig into it.”
