The mother of a little girl who was found safe and sound on Random Island after a night spent in the woods is raising concerns about respite care and a lack of child care for autistic children.
Sarah Burton is a single, working mom who has to rely on her own mother for child care for her eight year old autistic daughter.
Burton says her daughter Adalyn Skinner requires one-on-one continuous monitoring for her own safety.
She told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the child care options for parents of autistic children are very limited.
She says $10 a day child care is simply not available to her, “especially if they’re older than six, there’s really nothing” and she can’t find a respite worker to hep give her and her mom a break.
“I do qualify for respite care” says Burton, “I cannot find a worker, the wages isn’t enough, there’s no training, the hours are never enough.”
