Today’s heat has prompted advisories and warnings about making sure that children and pets aren’t left in vehicles unattended.
The record for this date was 28.3, set in 1889, but as of 3:00 p.m. the mercury had hit 30 degrees at the airport in St. John’s.
RCMP are reminding the public of the legal requirement to ensure that pets confined in parked vehicles have adequate ventilation.
That means windows are required to be rolled down to allow for adequate air flow, or that the air conditioning is left on.
If you anticipate being out for a period of time, it is best to leave your pet at home.
The RCMP is advising that if you do happen to see an animal left inside a vehicle on a warm day without adequate ventilation, contact your local police, and get a licence plate if possible.
Children should never be left unattended in a parked vehicle.
