The City of St. John’s hasn’t decided what to do with the $16,000 worth of fireworks not used on Canada Day.
In a statement to VOCM News, the city says it was “prioritizing safety” in cancelling the display on Tuesday, noting the Provincial Fire Index was “high” the day before, resulting in restrictions on fireworks permits by Forestry and fire officials
The city says with little rain in the forecast, and no sign that would change, the decision was made to cancel, adding the call had to be made “well in advance” due to the complex nature and planning for fireworks.
“Setup cannot begin at the last minute, and the information available to us did not allow for a safe go-ahead,” reads the statement.
